UPDATE

The Moon lay hidden's latest album, The Smell of Blood but Victory (1997 ART11), has been produced in a limited edition of 1000 and comes in a card box with a mini-poster and bonus CD.

Continuity with the duo's established style is maintained by Elisabeth's characteristic songs, chants and demonic dirges, while innovation is provided by the increasingly varied style of Albin's music which ranges from the pandemonium of a demonic carnival to dreamy orchestral pieces with a very hypnotic quality.

Clever use is made of looped soundclips, Scottish poetry is read by David Gibson of World Serpent, and spoken words are also contributed by Lina Baby Doll of Deutsch Nepal.

With interesting tunes, varied treatments, and a fuller sound, the duo has reached a level of sophistication and maturity that makes this their best release to date. It's very professional and highly recommended.

The release is distributed by World Serpent.

Rik 26 June 1997

The Vienna-based band The Moon lay hidden beneath a Cloud comprises Albin Julius and Elisabeth. It was founded in 1992 and has released four full-length CDs on their own label, Arthur's Round Table: The Moon lay hidden beneath a Cloud (1993 ART 1), Amara Tanta Tyri (1994 ART 2), A new soldier follows the path of a new King (1995 ART 3) and Were you of silver, Were you of gold (1996 ART 6).

KOSTNICE

Kostnice (1996) is a 7" issued in a limited edition of 222 containing two tracks recorded at the ossuary of Köstel Vsech svatıch (All Saints' Church) in Bohemia. The record comes in a plain, parchment-style folder with red wax seals. It has to be said that the music on this live recording is a bit thin and the sound quality does not compare with the studio-recorded CDs.

WERE YOU OF SILVER, WERE YOU OF GOLD

Were you of silver, Were you of gold (1996 ART 6) contains eight tracks which were specially written and recorded for the Dutch Radio 3/VPRO show 'Grand Disco Classique' and first broadcast in October 1995. This will also be issued in a limited (to 500) vinyl edition with an extra track.

The theme reflects their "inner conflict" with the bloody history of Yugoslavia and its style is very Balkan indeed. The instrumental sound is again thinner than on, say, A new soldier, but the vocals are correspondingly clearer.

YNDALONGG

Yndalongg (1996 ART 4) is a 10" containing three previously unreleased tracks, all recorded at Little Saxam Church, Suffolk, and it comes in a grey sleeve with a grey poster featuring the group's logo. One side has a laid-back, ambient-industrial instrumental which is very like some Nurse With Wound.

The other side is more typical of the duo's normal style but none-the-less quite unusual. The first track concerns the heinous 'Children's Crusade' of 1212 in which corrupt merchants traded on Christian zeal to transport thousands of children from Marseilles to Alexandria where they were sold into slavery. The song has a strong melody line, clever counterpoising of Elisabeth's two vocal tracks, and is reason enough for buying this record. The second track appears to be a thematic sequel but is not quite as good.

MADHR

Madhr (1996 ART 7) is a split 7" with Hybryds. It was planned to release it at a joint concert by the groups in Weißenburg, Germany, in September 1996, but the performance was cancelled due to unacceptable restrictions being imposed by the local city council.

The Moon lay hidden are in top form on their two tracks. The first has very assertive vocals, while the second is a fairly industrial, 'Satanic', piece. The Hybryds side features a nightmarish soundscape and a blast of classical music with spoken word samples etc.

A NIGHT IN FEAR (TMLHBAC/DEUTSCH NEPAL)

A Night In Fear (1996 ART 8) is a joint production of the Moon lay hidden and their good friend, Lina of Deutsch Nepal. This is not a split CD but a close collaboration between the two parties, creating a neo-folk/ritual-industrial hybrid which is more than the sum of its parts. The 3-track, 30-minute CD is powerful and exciting. The CD cover appears to feature some jolly huntsmen, but in usual minimalist Moon style other details are marked by their absence.

ON - THE WORLD AND EVERYTHING IN IT (COMPILATION)

The group also contributed to the compilation CD that comes with the first issue of On - The World And Everything In It magazine, edited by Tony Wakeford of Sol Invictus.

The Moon lay hidden beneath a Cloud are distributed in England by World Serpent Distribution, Unit 717 Seager Buildings, Brookmill Road, London SE8 4HL.
