WALDTEUFEL
WALDTEUFEL is an avant garde ensemble consisting of Annabel
Lee (formerly of Amber Asylum) and Marcus Wolff.
Their debut 7" features two tracks: 'The Great Intoxication' which
is a martial celebration with drum and German vocals, and 'The Return'
which is an instrumental dedicated to the German composer, Carl Orff,
on his 100th birthday.
This is a very unusual record. The first track opens with a tribal sound.
This is followed by spoken German and then more ritualistic chanting and
drumming. The other track features a menacingly discordant concertina
and a sound like wind chimes. The restricted number of musicians and instruments
gives the record a certain accoustic purity while its overall effect is
ominous.
The record is packaged with folkish Germanic artwork in red, black and
gold featuring an esoteric woodcut of a knight and other symbols. This
is certainly a collector's piece.
It is available post-paid for $5.00 in the US or $8.00 overseas. MO
or IMO payable to Markus Wolff (or well-concealed cash in registered letter),
Volkways, p.o.box 17656, Portland OR 97217, USA.
