SOL INVICTUS

In the Rain
1995
Tursa 010 CD

SOL's CD album, In the Rain, not only reflects Wakeford's talents for songwriting and musical composition, but his increasingly sophisticated direction of Sol's mini-orchestra.

Wakeford's guitar and vocals are joined on this album by Sarah Bradshaw on cello, David Mellor on piano and keyboards, Karl Blake on electric guitar and bass, Nathalie Van Keymeulen and Céline Marleix-Bardeau on violins, Eric Rogers on trumpet and Nick Hall on drums and percussion.

The album contains nine songs plus opening and closing instrumentals and all words and music are by Wakeford. The opening track, 'Stay', deals with the murder of a lover, 'Believe Me' with the tragic death of a child, 'Down the Years' with human frailty, 'In the Rain' with a double betrayal, 'Fall Like Rain' with mortality, and 'Oh What Fun' with suicide, while 'An English Garden' is more obscure but highly suggestive. 'The World Shrugged' appears to address the despair of a lost cause, but 'In Days to Come' an awesome regeneration is predicted.

The CD is accompanied by a 16-page booklet containing the words and a number of colour illustrations by Tor Lundvall based on the songs' themes.
