SOL
INVICTUS
In a Garden Green
1999 TURSA 021CD
50:41
Tony Wakeford's latest Sol Invictus
release continues his entrancement with neoclassical influences
(more explicitly pursued in his Orchestre
Noir project), whilst nodding to his apocalyptic folk and industrial
roots. My favourites are 'O Rubor Sanguinis' (text by Hildegard
von Bingen), 'Song of the Flower' (traditional text) and the title
track. The lyrics reflect further disdain for the world and its
people and further retreat into a private world bounded by the walls
of a literal and metaphorical Bastide in a homeland defined
by fountains and statues. Whether reflecting a fantasy past, present
or future, Sol is the rush of a familiar drug pumping through the
veins. Artwork is by Tor Lundvall and Andrew
King and the album comes in a slipcase with a mini poster of
the Tor painting used for the cover.
