Il Cancello Di Morte

2004
CD
Somnambulant Corpse

Stewart Gott

22 March 2004

dark ambient   ethereal

Fronted by a grinning skeleton, credits to Crionic Mind and Richard Ramirez on the back, released on Somnambulant Corpse - I fully expected an aural bloodbath. Instead the three tracks presented here - 'Massacres of the Innocent', 'Realms of the Living and the Dead' and 'Keepers of the Death Gate' - are surprisingly subdued. There is, from the off, an air of the cemetery at midnight about the thing. The wind blows, coffins creak, moody electronica soars above a bed of grumbling, muted noise. A distorted vocal, in evidence in the first track, tells a mumbled ghost story at the start of the closing piece, before sliding into a welter of scattergun noise and brooding electronics. From my own limited experience of such areas it would seem not only that the dead, when given a voice, are not entirely sure what to say, but that they are also often unable to say it in any way that is comprehensible. These blurry imprints and passing shadows, bursting forth in to sudden momentary clarity to deliver inconsequential, puzzling messages, are here in the deep sludge of this recording. Probably not one to play in the middle of the night while lying alone in a haunted house.
