MOVING FROM PALM O/S TO iPAQ POCKET PC

TRANFERRING PALM DATA

You can transfer your Palm data electronically, either by using Chapura's PocketMirror or via the Web-hased PIM Excite.

Instructions for using Excite in this manner can be found at:

The process worked well but trying to close your Excite account is another matter! I would now advise you to use PocketMirror. If you had a Palm III you'll find it on the accessories disk (I didn't realise I had it).

CONTRAST IN APPLICATION FUNCTIONALITY AND USAGE
Memo, Notes and Word

The biggest shock in changing to the iPAQ was cultural. On the Palm I made extensive use of Memo and ToDo lists with numerous notes organised into folders. In the conversion, Palm memos became Pocket PC notes and ToDo list items become Tasks. Neither of these Pocket PC categories is as versatile as its Palm equivalent, so my notes have now become Word documents. You'll get a very general reminder about Pocket PC tasks on your 'Today' screen, but they don't integrate with the diary. If you want a task reminder to appear on a certain day but not at any particular time you can enter it as an all-day appointment but if won't float to the next day.

DATA INPUT

It took some time to unlearn graffitti. The PPC 'Character Recognizer' system is far more natural, but it still pays to use some stylised/economical shortcuts.
