ORIFLAMME

Journal of Neo-Mediaevalism and Popular Mediaevalism

Original review at foot of page, updates above it.

Issue #8
1 December 2001

Special issue examining the late medieval perspective of the Antichrist coupled with an exclusive interview with medieval-murder-mystery writer Susanna Gregory, creator of the Matthew Bartholomew Chronicles (set in 14th Century Cambridge).

Issue #6
A4 28 pages

Mike Shankland's Oriflamme journal is a biannual printed magazine devoted to neo- and popular mediavalism, an interesting postmodern concept whereby scholarly articles on aspects of mediaeval history and culture rub shoulders with those concerning mediaeval inspired fiction, music, film and re-enactment projects. Even mediaeval politics gets an airing thanks to the exponents of Richard III.

Issue 6 (October 2000) includes items on Macronic Verse, the longbow and Joan of Arc's saintly relics, interviews with the The Soil Bleeds Black (the American neomediaeval music group) and the Lollard Society, and reviews of recordings by the Mediaeval Baebes and Gor.
