AUTUMN BLAZE

Mute Boy Sad Girl
2002
CD
Prophecy Productions Pro 045

This is the follow up to 2000's Bleak. It's certainly a departure from the sound of its predecessor. This time the German ensemble consisting of Marcus B and Schwadorf have perked things up. This is a lot brighter and melodic and even at times, dare I say, poppy!

All music and lyrics were written by Marcus B apart from the Cure cover 'Cold' which was penned by Robert Smith. The title track sets things off, It's quite fast and quirky. Marcus sings a bit like a younger Brian Ferry. 'It Never Felt Like This Before' starts quiet but develops into some powerful atmospheric goth rock. 'The Nature of Music' is a lot quieter, with it's piano mixed with crackles and beats giving it the trip hop feel. 'Kiss My Fear Away' is an anther example of the power and emotion here: it's a blend of spaced-out rock with lots of weird effects with some powerful heavy guitar entering here and there. On 'Cold' Marcus sings a bit like Robert Smith, although musically it's quite different to the Cure classic. It begins slow but builds into a heavy guitar lead crescendo of noise. It's quite brilliant and doesn't fail where most covers do. 'Shells and Butterflies' is the last of the nine songs here. Again it's powerful and atmospheric with lots of guitar and warped electronic sounds. Although some of this sounds as if Autumn Blaze could well be catapulted into the mainstream, there is a lot of weird dark elements keeping them underground.

JOHN MARSHALL - 12 May 2002
