BANABILA

Spherics
2001
CD
TONE CASUALITIES TCCD265

Michael Banabila is from the Netherlands. He started improvising with music from the age of 12. He is joined on this latest release by violinist Jorien Muste, guitarist Piet Lichtveld and Bobby on cymbal-drone. There are seven songs in the style of atmospheric electronic ambience. It starts off quite promising with 'A Strong Taste Of Urgency'. It's a fast track with screeching rhythmic electronics with a dreamy dark background. It's both hypnotic and spaced out. 'Tic Tac' is slower with a bouncy crackling dub sound and again with a full ambient back sound. 'Suma 3 - White Mix' is slower still with lots of scratches and crackles. It drifts even more into dark ambient territory. 'Science Freak' is a barrage of electronic bleeps which gradually build into a dark rhythm. 'Suma 4 - Blue Mix' is where things get a bit boring. It's minimal with a gentle bass rhythm and goes on for over nine minutes. 'Primitive Lab' follows on in the same vein although without the bass. Basically these last two tracks let it down and are both very boring, and I would probably turn off after 'Worm Jazz'.
