BRAIN DANCE

Redemption
2001
CD
Progressive Darkwave PDRO103

Brain Dance are from U.S.A they produce heavy goth-rock, much in the vein of Type O Negative although not as miserable. Sebastian Elliot provides the main vocals on here. There's a scary picture of him looking like a wrestler. VoraVor is responsible for guitars, backing vocals, programming and percussion.

At first listen it sounds a bit tacky and clinched but as it progresses I realise there are some excellent songs and I find some of it captivating. The usage of samples is quite spectacular as they blend with powerful emotional music. The samples are mainly taken from cult horror and sci-fi classics such as Star Trek and Halloween. 'Relentless' for example starts as industrial goth-rock although there's a massive 80s metal feel about it. Vora provides some excellent backing vocals on this one. It'd be nice to hear her do some lead vocals. Following this there's a nameless track in the middle completely made up of samples. It's pretty spectacular and I can't help thinking it's the best thing on here. Another highlight is the excellent 'Resilience'. This is less metal, more electronic. It's fast-paced and haunting and powerful and again mixed with some excellent samples.

JOHN MARSHALL - 20 March 2002
