Eric Aldéa's Saturno o Cipolla? merges exotic instruments,
drones and tension-building dischords with electronic signals and industrial
rhythms to provide music for choreographer Abou Lagraa's contemporary
dance company, La Baraka. This is Eric Aldéa's first solo
album but he has worked previously with Deity Guns and Bästard.
Five of the seven numbered but unnamed tracks are from La Baraka shows.
My favourite is the first one: "Wreaths of flavoured tobacco, spice scents
in a smooth summer evening," according to the blurb. The second captures
the high-pitched buzz of insects and other tropical sounds. Elements on
other tracks include ominous neoclassical chords, a wandering and sad
filmic melody and distorted sounds.
The product of a home studio with the collaboration of guest musicians
on double-bass, cello and violin, the music has an appealingly minimalist
clarity and tremendous immediacy.
