Caste O' Graye Skreeëns
2001 CD

Caste O' Graye Skreeëns is a solo release from Edward
Ka-Spel, main man in Legendary Pink Dots, and is the first
on his own label. Caste has a single track featuring two main pieces:
'Our Captain's Eyes' and 'Lights Out', but each of these is multifaceted
and it is not entirely clear to me where one track is supposed to end
and the other begin, but that is all part of the game.
The CD begins with the sounds of a tall ship at sea (water, creaking
timbers, wind), and a beat reminiscent of the end of Kraftwerk's 'Ohm
Sweet Ohm', but develops into the sounds one would be more likely to associate
with a spaceship. But it would be a mistake to try to interpret these
sounds literally. With ambient washes, beat grooves panning in and out,
found sounds and industrial effects, folkish ditties and snatches of spoken
word, it's a stream of musical subconsciousness, uniting psychedelic/prog-rock
and Dadaesque quirkiness with the colder realm of industrial-ambient.
This range of sounds - thematic and temporal - is what gives Ka-Spel (and
LPD) a distinctive style, and the support of fiercely loyal fans who will
not be disappointed with this release.
