BRIGHTER DEATH NOW

1890 (title)
2001 (year of issue)
Vinyl LP only
Cold Meat Industry cmi101

As the year creepy crawled its way to the end, another black record was released on the 23rd of November. I was told before I heard 1890 that it would be a boring record. I think the exact quote was: "Why the hell should everything be so fucking cheerful?"

1890 isn't the sonic attack that has been Brighter Death Now's trademark during the last couple of years but is it boring? Don't think so but it ain't cheerful: that's for sure. It reminds me more of Lille Roger (I wonder if the second instalment of the Lille Roger greatest hits, Shit Fun, will see the light of the night) than Brighter Death Now.

I've been reading a lot about sonic warfare during the last months and when I play 1890 really loud I get the feeling that if the FBI had used it in Waco the Branch Davidians would have surrendered immediately. Instead they played "ear-splitting recordings of whining, taunting voices, dentist drills, and rabbits being slaughtered" according to Adam Parfrey in Hidden and Suppressed (Feral House).

In the mid-eighties German band FâLX çêrêbRi made a track on the 19 Keys 19 Bands compilation that always gives me a headache. 1890 doesn't go that far but it creates a haunting feeling of unease and how many records have managed to do that?
