This second sampler of "fairy voices" features 12 tracks
from artists on Prikosnovenie's Iris imprint, half previously unreleased.
The imprint has a reputation for heavenly female voices in particular,
and this compilation kicks off with the 'The Blackbird' by the talented
Lousa John-Krol. I was less than kind when reviewing Louisa's album
last year, something I now regret as listening to this particular track
again, I am actually rather taken with it, not least for its theme associating
blackbirds with the migration of souls.
Featured projects which we've previously covered include Anima in
Fiamma, Caprice and Gor which has two solo tracks and
one with Chako - the exotic and unreleased 'Zeloun'. Chako features
in her own project, Jack or Jive, as well as also teaming up with
Lys on the unreleased and mysterious-sounding 'Lady Yin'. That's
quite a lot of cross-fertilization!
Previously unknown to me is Jaramar whose 'Como una pintura' is
a long ballad sung with considerable confidence and professionalism. Daemonia
Nymphe's unreleased 'Hymne to Bacchus' is goth theatre but with a
characteristically Greek sound thanks to the exotically wavering vocals
and the choice of instrumentation. Jack or Jive's Darkwoods
features female vocals from Japan over an ethereal soundscape of gentle
washes. Christian Wolz's 'Culoquia' is a poignant choral requiem.
Collection d'Arnell Andrea's 'Une parc, une tonnelle' is perhaps
the most mainstream item here.
I don't know if label compilations are really bought by fans, but I can
certainly recommend this one. Prikosnovenie boasts a stable of exceptional
talent of the highest professional quality and you won't be disappointed
by this introduction to it. I don’t know how many of our English
readers share my well-publicised enthusiasm for Italian neofolk, but those
who do should seriously check out the artists on this French label who
encapsulate so many of the same qualities and others besides. Also from
