AMENTI
SUNCROWN
2001
70:19
World Serpent
The fire rises in Abtu, and so it comes; I cause it to come, the Eye
of Horus. It is set in order upon your brow, O Osiris Khenti-Amenti; it
is set in your shrine and rises on your brow; it is set on your brow,
O Osiris Nu, it is set on your brow. The Eye of Horus protects you, O
Osiris Khenti-Amenti, and it keeps you in safety; it casts down headlong
all your enemies, all your enemies have fallen down headlong before thee.
Fallen, vanquished by this burning, scorching light - this Amenti Suncrown.
Ancient Egyptian religion has Amenti as a Valhalla, a resting place where
warriors feast on cakes and ale (make mine a lager, and no need for a
scrap beforehand). Unless its inhabitants are totally comatose on the
cakes they will soon be roused by the dark mutterings of the esoteric
samples employed here, mingling with the boomy doomy ominous swirl of
an arsenal of twiddling, bleeping synthesisers. Dark, uneasy ambient music
fills the air like the humming of distant bells, like metallic trumpets,
droning and sparkling. A digeridoo, sampling, tapes, "industrial artefacts"
and aboriginal clapsticks (presumably something close to what Yamataka
Eye once evocatively described as a "handcrap") add their voices amidst
the melee, and although all this may summon an occasional vision of the
dread ghost of Mike Oldfield, the terrible spectre of Klaus Schulze, this
varied, thoughtful and exquisitely produced album has a real spirituality
to it, encased in a gleaming, glowing futuristic shroud of electronic
wizardry. I have to confess that I think the best thing about this trio
is their name - but their music is pretty inspiring too, particularly
when they lean (more) towards the dark side. Mighty.
