VON
THRONSTAHL
E Pluribus Unum
2001
CD
Cold Spring CSR37CD
Following the debut album, Imperium Internum, Von Thronstahl's
E Pluribus Unum collects together all compilation tracks and
10" releases, along with some remixes and unreleased pieces. It's is an
intensely powerful melange of dark atmospheric metal, neo-classical soundtrack
music, industrial sounds, German spoken word, snatches of historical marching
songs, a loungey bit in Boyd Rice style, some bell-like keyboards reminiscent
of The Exorcist, and some echoes of rock opera and Pink Floyd's
The Wall.
Solemn, serious and dramatic, these people really know what they're doing
in the field of the epic martial music cult. Von Thronstahl is
not the only purveyor of this genre, but the musical quality makes it
one of the best, not least because of the strength of the melodies. The
World War Two connotations, pro-Arab sentiments and anti-Americanism of
this Evolian cri de coeur may offend some, but the album cannot
be faulted on artistic grounds.
