VINYL ROUNDUP
It's that time of year when I wind up the gramophone and attempt to catch
up on the pile of incoming vinyl. I'm suspicious of this new-fangled technology
which will surely never replace wax cylinders

DREAM
INTO DUST
Salvation's Corridor/Crystal Mirrors
2002*
7" vinyl picture disc
It was about five years ago in Flux's early days when I first
came into contact with the work of the then little-known but aspiring
Derek Rush. His project at that time was called December
and it set new standards for the musical conveyance of depression and
despair! The two tracks on the forthcoming picture disk from his current
project, Dream Into Dust, are far less depressive. Both tracks
are instrumentals, but they reflect the opposite poles of Derek's work:
'Crystal Mirrors' is quite tuneful while 'Salvation's Corridor' pulls
out all the industrial stops such as hammering and gurgling.

* Postscript: This disk was delayed for a year and finally released
on the French label, Athanor, http://www.arsregia.org.

CAMERDATA
MEDIOLANENSE/PAVOR NOCTURNUS
L'Alfiere (The Ensign)
2001
10" vinyl
Mediolanum
Eis Und Licht
Camerata Mediolanense and Pavor Nocturnus each contribute
two tracks. I don't know anything about Pavor Nocturnus (except that the
name means 'night terrors'), but Camerata Mediolanense has been one of
my favourite groups ever since I borrowed their Musica Reservata
CD from Tony Wakeford and failed to return it. Camerata Mediolanense's
tracks are 'Salve, Mundi Domine, Caesar noster, Ave' - a sacral piece
in Latin, and 'L'Homme Armé (Versione)', the popular mediaeval
secular song given a nicely tortured apocalyptic folk treatment. Pavor
Nocturnus' 'Ouverture' is atmospheric neo-classical in 'war documentary'
style while 'Lebensraum' is another instrumental piece but with a somewhat
heavier and oppressive quality.
