SOL INVICTUS

Brugge
2001
CD
Available only from Tursa website http://www.tursa.com

Sol Invictus may not make many live appearances - at least in Britain - but Tony's vision for this project is an organic one that can manifest itself in live performance as well as studio productions. Those who have only experienced the latter have missed a great deal, but here is your chance to capture something of it.

This concert recording was made in the Cactus Club, Brugge, in 1996 and can only be obtained by ordering it directly from the online shop on Tony Wakeford's Tursa website. The album begins with a tragi-romantic neoclassical string intro leading into 'Amongst the Ruins', a celebration of the ancient pagan virtue of heroism in the face of doom that is quintessential Sol, and features 15 tracks including Sol classics like 'Sheath and Knife', 'The Killing Tide' and 'Death of the West'.

Raw and largely unedited, it captures supremely the folk qualities of neofolk in a way most would fear to follow. But who cares about occasional feedback and offkey notes, when you have brilliant words and tunes driven by the dynamism of Sol's performance? This is real and alive, and vastly superior to the sterile perfection which the potential of our technology encourages.

Rik - 12 June 2001
