KRAANG
Kraang
Vinyl LP
2000
[scan] Despite the fact that he played for a dark British pop band, experimental
music is something that has kept Mr Murphy busy for quite a long time.
A long time it is indeed. Kraang was recorded between 1981 and
1983. In a way it could be seen as a precursor to the Shining Vril
album. It has only 4 tracks which all seem to hover in the same area:
primitive piercing sounds mixed with samples of agonizing screams, made
by, I quote, "various cheap devices and EMS AKS synth". The first side
has the tracks 'Agony' and 'Neurasthenia', and they definitely give us
what we all seem to crave: bleeding ears. The second track ends in a mess
of sounds and samples - bleeps and piercing shrieks and shattering noises.
The second side has the tracks 'Man is meat' and 'Uro'. 'Man is meat'
starts off calmer, easier. It sounds a bit like a factory that's going
to blow up, pressure rising, or it could also be a lunatic cannibal cutting
people up! It's very strange that J Murphy hasn't been asked to do soundtracks
for experimental or horror movies. Taking into account the huge amount
of bleeps and noises, I think it's not a good record for epileptic patients
And now I'm going to listen to Abba Gold.
