ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS

I Fell In Love With A Dead Boy
2001
CD SINGLE
Durtro CD 054
Distributor: World Serpent Distribution
14:17

Antony and the Johnsons are the band well-rated by David Tibet and featured on his Durtro label. Frontman Antony was born in the UK although he was brought up in California and now lives in New York. The ensemble will be joining Current 93 on their April dates at the Bloomsbury Theatre.

This three-track CD starts off with the title track which is quite uplifting. It brings to mind something recent by Moby. Antony's voice is very powerful and could be put in the same category as someone like David McCalmont. There is certainly great depth to this voice and it is aided by a lot of piano, also provided by Antony. You could well imagine him sneaking into the mainstream just like Marc Almond managed all those years ago. 'Mysteries of love' is a Lynch, Badalamenti composition which was originally done by Julee Cruise. It's quite a slow dark track as is the third and final one which is a cover of Current 93's 'Soft Black Stars'.

JOHN MARSHALL - 20 March 2001
