AENIMA

Revolutions
1999
CD
BIO CD 29

It's always a pleasure to receive material from countries less well associated with the gothic-industrial scene, and the Portuguese group Aenima is certainly no disappointment. The band was formed by Carmen and Rune in Autumn 1997 and now includes Paulo (bass), Nor (guitar) and Hugo (drums). Carmen is the lead singer and all-round inspiration. Rune comes from London and is the group's digital expert.

Carmen's vocals are excellent and Aenima produce a rich and ethereal Dead Can Dance-style sound. I'm sorry, but the comparison is inescapable without in any way implying that this is a mere imitation. The sound is on the whole busier and more electronic and the vocals distinctly different. Aenima have already achieved professional maturity and their latest work is, I understand, enlivened by a stronger and more live-sounding approach.

Contracted to produce two CDs, they were rendered label-less when the record company (Symbiose) went out of business after the release of this first one, Revolutions. Their current aims are to get tracks into compilation CDs and bookings for concerts and festivals throughout Europe during the Summer. So come on you dark music impresarios and contact them at the address below.
