MATT HOWDEN

Hellfires
2000
CD

Ever wondered what hell sounds like? We all know what the usual Christian conception of this malignant place looks like - you'll never get a cold there, but Dante's hell is a different place - the exact opposite - a cold freezing place. And what does Matt Howden's hell sound and look like? Despite the fact that Howden gets his inspiration from Classical mythology and the Egyptian realm of the dead, the album doesn't sound like any of the above mentioned inspirational sources. The album is conceived to be listened to as one piece, and is best seen as a circle of death and life. Once the gates are opened the music starts and it never stops, a march to hell and back. Howden mixes violin sounds and bass with repetitive military drumsounds, and his own voice, though his wife joins him from time to time. It's in the same vein as Sieben but a trifle darker and a bit more direct in its background. It's a very good album with a unified sound and will fit into the record collections of both the more folk orientated and those who like an electronic approach.

RUBEN DE SOMER - 28 December 2000
