FOLKSTORM
Victory or Death
2000
CD
Cold Spring CSR31CD
47:58
Uncompromisingly brutal in approach, Folkstorm - Mz.412 frontman Kremator
Nordvargr's industrial noise side project - is all about blood and death
and chaos. The rallying cry of "No politics. No religion. No standard"
suits me fine, the blunt fury of the music re-inforced by the bleak grey
cover images. Taking a cue from the likes of Strom.ec and Brighter Death
Now, Victory or Death has a feel of desolation and hopelessness,
of confusion and carnage and harsh, seething energy. The opening track,
'Stoltz', rises from a choked vocal loop into a storming wall of distorted
chatter and swirling noise that hammers incessantly at your consciousness.
There follows the noise of 'Epilogue 2', the machine rhythms of 'Epilogue
3', the screeching, surging 'Feldgeschrei' and the metallic roar of 'Propaganda'.
The best track is the violent, distorted 'Harsh Discipline', all ominous
bass rumble and high end yelp: harsh indeed, and yes - disciplined, too.
More of the same follows, with the dark and deep 'Funeral Force' another
stand out track. A decent follow up to debut album Information Blitzkrieg,
Victory or Death straddles the death industrial and power electronics
genres in a suitably gloomy, growly manner that will no doubt appeal to
anyone struggling with an overwhelming temptation to cut their own throat
with a rusty razor blade. Tough stuff indeed.
