RAPOON

Fallen Gods (Cidar)
2000
Double CD
Staalplaat STCD 094
UK distributor: THESE

This CD is a reissue of the long sold out Fallen Gods with bonus CD of Cidar which was originally a DAT-only release. Rapoon is the work of Robin Storey who is based in Newcastle Upon Tyne. He concentrates on mixing ethnic styles and samples into his own brand of music. Fallen Gods begins with 'Sanctum' which sounds like the music you'd get in a jungle scene in a movie or documentary. It's okay I guess with its quite hypnotic and bouncy rhythm and dark sounds drifting in and out. The CD carries on along the same lines with looped rhythms although with a more menacing sound emerging. Highlights include 'Iron Path' sounding like it could be a remix of a Dead Can Dance tune. The title track is pretty brilliant: it's pounding rhythm is very heavy whilst the effects accompanying it manage to conjure up something dark and spectacular. 'Dusk Red Walls' gives you a surprising change in style with it's Cajun-folk-sounding guitar quite haunting. Cidar has a much harder, darker sound to it although Robin's trademark rhythms are still there. 'Estuary' is my favourite out of this bunch. It has a trance like feel to it with the echoing sound of female vocals mixed with some percussion. Also worth a mention is the excellent epic 'Cimbala' which has a very nightmarish feel to it with weird ethnic samples and strange vocal effects mixed within a mad rumbling sound. This is followed by the closing track, 'Lake', which concentrates more on that dark rumble which I am particularly fond of, although I'm sure my speakers aren't so keen on it. Out of the two CDs Cidar is more consistent in keeping me captivated although Fallen Gods certainly has its worthy moments.
