AUTUMN
BLAZE
Bleak
2000
CD
Pro 32
Bleak is the second album from German three piece Autumn Blaze.
It is said not in any way to resemble the sound of their debut Daemmer
Elben Trageodie. Beginning with 'Someone's Picture' you get an instant
impression it's going to be black metal but the heavy guitar never gets
over-intense and soon dark melodies swoop in. It's quite atmospheric in
the same vein as bands like Puressence and Strangelove.
The most striking thing is Eldron's vocals, both powerful and full
of expression. Also he has an excellent scream as demonstrated on 'So
close yet so far'. Each song has substance enough to keep you captivated
about how it will develop, usually building into something quite magnificent
and powerful. The whole CD is very dark indeed with its themes of loneliness,
despair and isolation. Bleak is certainly a fitting title. This
is most evident in the final track '..and we fall'. Slow, acoustic with
an eerie folkish sound, it never gets loud like the others but is just
as dark and as it fades out it leaves you wanting more.
