Silence is Sexy is Einstürzende Neubauten's first full-length
release since 1996's Ende Neu, and it is their first release not
to feature any tracks with F M Einheit, one of the two percussionists
in the band and one of the major shapers of the older Neubauten sound.
Although the change in line-up has affected their sound, this CD shows
they are still in good form, albeit more as purveyors of arty yet powerful
rock as opposed to arty yet powerful noise. Neubauten always had more
structure to their music than their contemporaries in the early-80s 'industrial'/experimental/noise
scene, so it's no surprise to see them having taken a more song-based
route than some other bands. Some would call this change "selling
out", but in many ways creating accessible yet experimental music
is more subversive than playing unoriginal unlistenable noise only listened
to by a few. The former is much harder to do without disappointing earlier
fans, and Neubauten have managed to do it well this time around.
Recycled is the soundtrack to a film by Maria von Heland that
also features Blixa Bargeld (lead singer of Neubauten) in the
role of a bartender. The soundtrack is primarily orchestral and
instrumental, with a bit of singing on a few tracks from Blixa, Amanda
Ooms, and Mirjam Hardenberg. The music is quite good and would
appeal to fans of neoclassical soundtrack music, such as that of Michael
Nyman, as well as Neubauten fans.
