Unveiled is the solo project from Of the Wand and the Moon
member Hansen. Silver is an impressive dark ambient record
that successfully captures the claustrophobia and the numbing cold of
a Scandinavian winter. Although a powerful and cohesive whole, each carefully
crafted track has an individual feel to it. The bludgeoning howl of 'Letters
and Stones' conjures runic visions, the fuzzy guitar distortion of 'Winter'
resonates bleakness, the slurred vocals on 'Soul in a Crystal' elucidate
a nightmare fairytale. There's a lot of good music coming out of Scandinavia
at the moment, from Entarte and Pan Sonic (via Barcelona)
through Leif Elggren and CM Von Hausswolf to Grunt,
John Hegre and Lasse Marhaug. On this evidence Denmark's
Hansen, and Of the Moon and the Wand leader Kim Larsen - who contributes
so much of this - belong right up there with the best of them. Far and
away the best ambient record I've heard this year.
