MIRANDA
SEX GARDEN
Carnival of Souls
July 2000
Sugar Daddy Records SDRCD001
Miranda Sex Garden are finally and properly back with an album,
a single and a London show. Katharine Blake's singing takes centre-stage
on the strongly song-based new album, Carnival of Souls. Besides
Katharine, the current lineup numbers Trevor Sharpe on drums, Ben
Golomstock on guitar, Teresa Casella (from Mediaeval Baebes)
on bass, Mike Servent on keyboards and Barney Hollington
on violin.
The album is much more 'torch song'/cabaret-orientated
and features eleven tracks written by the band plus a cover of the Duke
Ellington jazz standard, 'Caravan'. Katharine has maintained
a parallel interest in cabaret throughout her career, but it has not previously
come to the fore so obviously. Decorated with a montage of writhing bodies,
the liner art maintains MSG's devotion to to the concept of sleaze as
art.
For the single Tonight, which will be released
in early June, the band were joined by Katharine’s father, Robin, on sax
and brother, Andrew, on trumpet. The two will also be taking time out
from their own jazz-electronica band, Blowpipe, to join Miranda
Sex Garden when they play their first show in more than two years. That's
in London on 1 June 2000 at The Monarch, Camden. Check the FluxEuropa
gigboard and the MSG website for more details.
MSG were originally on Mute but were sadly dropped
in 1996 whilst still in their heyday. This appears to have been a real
blow. They resurfaced briefly in 1997, but in recent times Katharine has
been concentrating on her role as musical director of the highly successful
classical-chart-topping 'coven', Mediaeval Baebes. Carnival
of Souls is the first release on SugarDaddy Records which Katharine
has co-founded according to the dictum that if you can't beat 'em, set
up your own label!
As part of the promotion for the new album, MSG is
circulating an official biography which you can read here.
