BLOWZABELLA (1978-1990)
Compilation
1995 OSMO CD001
74:56
Blowzabella disbanded (or, at least, stopped recording)
in 1990 but are featured here as a tribute to the most exciting
group of folk musicians I have ever heard. The group was formed
in 1978 by Jon Swayne (bagpipes, woodwinds), Bill O'Toole
(bagpipes, woodwinds), Sam Palmer (hurdy-gurdy) and
Dave Armitage (melodeon, percussion), who were all musical instrument
makers at the London College of Furniture. Other members came and
went including Andy Cutting (melodeon) and Jo Freya
(saxophone, vocals).
Influenced by bagpipe and hurdy-gurdy music which they heard at
French festivals, they developed a racy instrumental style on the
English folk scene. The instruments gave their often frenetic music
mediaeval and Breton flavourings. The phrase 'Wall of Sound' - used
as a title for one of their albums - fairly describes the heady
barrage of music they launched at the listener.
This compilation CD was issued in 1995, featuring tracks from
all six of their albums. The opening medley is fairly typical of
English country dance music, but the remainder demonstrates the
livelier, sometimes darker, and very much more interesting French,
Balkan and other elements with which they infused it.
Blowzabella made well over a thousand appearances in pubs and
clubs, on TV and radio and at festivals and parties, but they remained
a dance band at heart.
