A Taste Of...

Masami Akita is a genius. This, his first effort for the ever-impressive
Mego label, shows yet again his ability to churn out noise albums at an
astonishing rate without any drop whatsoever in the quality of material.
A Taste Of
presents four tracks that deal with the delicate
and intricate matter of Japanese cuisine: stewed beef, stewed octopus,
young yellowtail, shitake mushroom, minced raw pompano fish - it's all
regurgitated forth from Akita's hard drive into an engaging fricassee
of filter sweeps and distorted rhythm passages. Simmering nicely rather
than boiling over with excess, standout effort 'Tempura in Moss Garden'
- the longest track at over 22 minutes - is one of Akita's finest since
his migration to digital pastures. Those of you yearning for the raw bloodbaths
of old - Venereology, Oersted, Mercurated - here
have one captured, chopped up and sautéed to perfection, the raw
power of Ab Hunter blended subtly with the sophisticated flavour
of Degradation of Tapes, served up on a cold clean white platter
that lends a startling clarity to the bright delights it contains. This
is as good as other recent offerings Tentacle, Amlux and
Ikebukuro Dada, and that's about as good as it gets.
