THE MEDIAEVAL BAEBES

Some of the Mediaeval Baebes at a Halloween concert in London 31 October 1997

The Mediaeval Baebes are twelve good-looking young women assembled by and including Katharine Blake of Miranda Sex Garden. Devoted to mediaeval song and looking sexy, the group has been signed to Virgin Records and have now released their first album, Salva Nos (1997 CDVE935) which means 'Save Us'.

I saw the Baebes when they supported MSG at a Halloween concert in London. They lined up in various scanty costumes, but the action began with Dorothy Carter - an elderly thirteenth addition to the coven - who played hammered dulcimer and sang in an effective style.

The Baebes then performed a number of mediaeval and traditional songs, accompanied by Katharine on recorder, Nichole Sleet on bodhran and Dorothy playing the dulcimer and hurdy-gurdy. The delivery was in a fairly straight mediaeval-folky style, excitingly fast and with plenty of percussion in places.

The album, which features 16 tracks in English, Latin and French, afforded a better opportunity to evaluate the vocals. The voices are very young and sweet, albeit lacking the force and depth of classically-trained singers. This postmodern audio-visual combination of mediaeval pastiche and gothic fetishism is calculated to upset serious exponents of early music while their plans to perform in churches have been complicated by their association with paganism and witchcraft.

While the Baebes may find it hard to steal an audience from Gothic Voices or the Spice Girls, it's a great marketing spoof and they seem to be having fun.

The Baebes are Nicole Frobusch, Carmen Schneider, Katharine Blake, Nichole Sleet, Karen Lupton, Teresa Casella (who also plays bass in MSG), Marie Findley, Audrey Evans, Clare Ravel, Ruth Galloway, Rachel Van Asch and Cylindra Sapphire.
