INVERNO
Gateways to Darken Worlds
2003
CDR
Reaping Horde RH X
Inverno's Gateways to Darken Worlds is
an exercise in dark ambient minimalism consisting largely of tones
formed by atmospheric pads with some distorted sound effects. At
first I expected something more to build up and come out of this,
but expectation was reduced to vain hope and ultimately to resignation
that nothing much more was going to happen. The sounds used on some
tracks are more interesting than those used on others, but each
track was pretty repetitive. The appropriately entitled 'Screeching
Mist of Nifelheim' was certainly successful in evoking a sense of
coldness, but, like the others, it didn't really go anywhere. 'Silenciosas
Sombres En Terras Sangrentas' employed an interestingly mysterious
sound. 'Gateway' is probably the best. There is a more promising
orchestral quality to the pads and a little spoken word. It's fuller,
more varied, and, indeed, more satisfying. I'll admit that the material
on this CDR is better than some other dark ambient albums issued
by bigger labels in 'proper' CD format, but minimalism can equal
monotony and I've come to expect more, especially from Portugal's
excellent and expanding Reaping Horde label. The
CD is packaged in a hand-made hessian sleeve.
