IN
GOWAN RING
Hazel Steps Through A Weathered Home
2002
CD
LUNE 004
"The poetic manipulations here reflect upon this life-world
as an often traversed habitation. The enigmas of nostalgia, impermanence,
and existential transcendence are recurrent. Musically, the arrangements
portray a pensive cyclical polyphony whereby each constituent enfolds
within another, evincing an integral geometric symmetry. This collection
is at once the most simple and the most involved of all my work."
So declares Composer/Conductor B'eirth. Phew!
Play this recording without introduction and people will think
it's something by Marin Marais, but the Baroque intro gives way
to the unique synthesis of folk, mediaeval and psychedelia that
could only be In Gowan Ring. Joining the Composer/Conductor
on these recordings are guests Annabel Lee (Alraune,
Blood Axis, former Amber Asylum)
on violin and viola, Michael Moynihan (Blood
Axis) on bodhran, Philip and Gayle
Neuman (De Orgonographia, O.R.B.)
on alto and tenor sackbut and Margie Wienk (Eyesores,
Fern Knight, Iditarod) on violincello.
Other instruments featured include guitar, cittern, and harp which
were designed and fabricated by the Conductor himself.
IGR are still very strange - in an entrancing way - but no longer
scarey. Listening to this album is like sliding into a warm bath
infused with oils and perfumes. Mellow and beautiful, but tinged
with a certain sadness, B'eirth's gentle voice and music are a delight.
The lyrics are obscure, sometimes so obscure as seemingly to loose
all meaning, but still suggestive and a source of inspiration and
contemplation for those who make the effort to listen to them.
