OUTSKIRTS

View of Florence from San Miniato di Monte

On the south bank to the east of the historic centre, rises the Piazzale Michelangelo where you can enjoy one the best views of the city. This is a popular haunt for the locals on Sunday afternoons. There's also a hillside cafe with a good view to the west, and on top of the hill the interesting Romanesque church of San Miniato di Monte, surrounded by a fort designed by Michel Angelo. This is within walking distance of the centre, but you'll need to set aside time to do it.

A bus-ride away to the north of Florence you will find the village of Fiesole (not visited) which is of Etruscan origin and boasts Roman remains.

DAY TRIPS

We took a coach excursion to the mediaeval hilltop village of San Gimignano (characterised by its surviving mediaeval towers) and Siena (famous for the biannual Palio and panna forte).
San Gimignano

We also took the train to Pisa to see the Campo dei Miracali, a sort of 'giant football field' and home to the Torre Pendente (Leaning Tower), Duomo, Baptistry and the interestingly Islamic-influenced cemetery. Lucca and Vinci were also highly recommended, but we didn't have the time.
