OUTSKIRTS
 |
| View of Florence from San Miniato di Monte |
On the south bank to the east of the historic centre, rises the
Piazzale Michelangelo where you can enjoy one the
best views of the city. This is a popular haunt for the locals on
Sunday afternoons. There's also a hillside cafe with a good view
to the west, and on top of the hill the interesting Romanesque church
of San Miniato di Monte, surrounded by a fort designed
by Michel Angelo. This is within walking distance of the centre,
but you'll need to set aside time to do it.
A bus-ride away to the north of Florence you will find the village
of Fiesole (not visited) which is of Etruscan origin
and boasts Roman remains.
DAY TRIPS
 |
|
We took a coach excursion to the mediaeval hilltop village
of San Gimignano (characterised by its surviving
mediaeval towers) and Siena (famous for the
biannual Palio and panna forte). |

We also took the train to Pisa to see
the Campo dei Miracali, a sort of 'giant
football field' and home to the Torre Pendente
(Leaning Tower), Duomo,
Baptistry and the interestingly Islamic-influenced
cemetery. Lucca and Vinci
were also highly recommended, but we didn't have the time.
