EVENT HORIZON (1997)

Dir: Paul Anderson
Sam Neill, Laurence Fishburne, Sean Pertwee

After seeing the trailer for this film I thought it looked like a poor man’s Alien, but after being told by a friend they were scared shitless I rushed to see it.

To my relief it isn't another Alien, although it is set in space. Dr William Weir (Sam Neil) leads an expedition to recover his unique faster-than-light spacecraft, Event Horizon, which turns up near Neptune after missing for seven years. Strange things start to occur such as when the crew are confronted with their worst regrets/fears. It’s rather bloody and spectacular and has a very clever plot, although Nightmare on Elm Street III and Hellraiser II did spring to mind.

In short it's an excellent sci-fi/horror movie. And I wasn't scared, but then I never am.

JOHN MARSHALL - 25 October 1997
