COIL

Unnatural History III

It seems the entire world - well, at least the world I inhabit - awaits the new Trent Reznor-associated Coil album. And so, to keep the fanboys satisfied, Coil have released their third album of rarities and oddities. In fact, the liner notes give quite elucidatory information regarding the recording, prior existence and also the original date of release (where applicable) - this time in multi-page booklet with incredible (color) artwork by former Rudimetary Peni kingpin, Nick Blinko.

The music, despite originating from their entire decade-and-a-half life span, has a distinct 90s feel - full, electric and almost danceable. The weird Dionysian 12" mix of 'Panic' is included, as are 11 pieces originally created for commercials that now merely bear the titles, 'Airline', 'Perfume', 'Accident Insurance' etc. A particular highlight is the spaced-out sitar sound on 'Neither His Nor Yours', a piece originally written for John Giorno's Poetry System. A moving statement of eclectic musical gnosis.

GREG BEAR - 28 June 1997

The album is distributed by World Serpent.
