A
CHALLENGE OF HONOUR
Wilhelm Gustloff
2002
CD
Cold Spring CSR46CD
Wilhelm Gustloff is an unusual documentary/music recording
commemorating the World War 2 sinking by a Soviet submarine of a
German hospital ship full of refugees and wounded. Samples from
Frans Wisbar's 1959 film Nacht Fiel über
Gotenhafen are masterfully interwoven with well-chosen dramatic
documentary-style film music, and further interspersed with songs.
Even though I can't understand the German of the film's soundtrack,
the action is easy to follow and the combination of film soundtrack
and music creates a highly visual image. An interesting, indeed
superb, recording but also a very poignant one, especially for German
listeners.
A Challenge Of Honour is now the Dutch project
of Peter S. of Materialschlacht
and the website Above The Ruins, although it was
originally the project of a German, Johan König.
This CD was recorded by Peter and Johan in 2001 and originally released
as a limited-edition CDR with 7 additional songs by Peter. This
new Cold Spring release includes a further 3 songs by Peter.
