Gorgeous photographs of Beachy Head, the Sussex beauty spot notorious
for attracting suicides, grace the cover. Perhaps this is 'The Shadow
Over Eastbourne' mentioned as one of the track titles, although more likely
this refers to the local's knowledge that evergreen comedian Ken Dodd,
no doubt accompanied by his Diddymen and his tickling stick, will be paying
a visit to the town on August 4th. What we have here is a collection
of "academic" techno tracks from the early to mid 1990s, many of them
apparently now seeing the light of day for the first time. Often ingenious
and innovative, these still sound fresh nearly a decade on, reminding
me of early Warp stuff - Polygon Window in particular - and the
sort of material that appeared on the Trance Europe Express compilations.
A mixed bunch, with the most successful effort, the surreal 'Das Klang'
closing the album. Distinctly reminiscent of David Kristian's Beneath
The Valley Of The Modulars, an album this material pre-dates, if that
makes any sense at all.
