As long as you go off-season and can ignore the naff lace shops Brugge is well worth a visit. Plenty of cosy bars and places to eat and some amazing churches for those who wish to mix the spiritual with excess, and why not?

The Hotel Salvators' top of the range room is also at the top of the hotel, a drawback for those with luggage-happy partners, but well worth the climb! For around fifty quid you get a big room with a lovely view of the Salvators Cathedral. A kitchenette with fridge and hot plate makes it seem more like an apartment, complete with a beautifully appointed bathroom with chic shower and decadent jacuzzi. You can drink Leffe beer by an open fire in the tastefully decorated bar and you can even check your email free of charge after 5 o'clock. Price includes breakfast. Highly recommended.
