BACKWORLD
Holy Fire
1997
HCD001
Distibuted by World Serpent
Backworld's Holy Fire (1997 HCD001) is in the apocalyptic
folk tradition of Death In June, Sol
Invictus and Current 93. but much of the
album more particularly resembles the loungey numbers of Boyd
Rice. The title track is even reminiscent of genre trailblazers, Changes,
but this does not mean to say that Backworld lacks a style of its own
or that the album is incoherent. Words and music are by composer and playwright,
Joseph Budenholzer, who has worked in the Cinema of Transgression
and provided music for Lydia Lunch's spoken-word album, Matrikamantra.
To emerge from nowhere into a specialised genre with such a mature style
is impressive, and although Backworld doesn't have a string of albums
behind it, let's hope it has one ahead. The album is distributed by leading
harbingers of doom, gloom and exaltation, World
Serpent.
