ALEXEI BORISOV
Before the Evroremont
2002
CD
N&B Research Digest
(m.dos distribution)
30:37
A
well structured collage of environmental sound (radio, telephone conversations,
sawing, hammering, drilling, clattering), distorted guitars and disrupted
computer wizardry, Alexei Borisov's disc has an immediate, raw
quality to it that both intrigues and unsettles. Evroremont is
a Muscovite term meaning "Euro-renovation", the replacement of Soviet
style furnishings and decoration with a look supposedly more in keeping
with the Western side of the continent. Although first to impact on private
homes this style revolution is now having profound effects on the way
the city as a whole looks, and on the way it views itself. Designed to
run alongside Anne Hamalainen's slide show of Moscow garages and
outhouses, this has a bleakness and a clarity which grabs the listener
even without this visual stimulation. A sharply taken snapshot of a world
in turmoil.
