ERIC ALDEA / IVAN CHIOSSONE

Narcophony
2003
CD
34:36
0101. UK distributors: Cargo.

The first five tracks of the seven presented here, the five-part 'Petit Buddha', were inspired by 'Spiral Insana', a track recorded nearly twenty years ago by Nurse with Wound. Dark and claustrophobic, this is intense listening, the ominous low key rumbling and humming pierced by intermittent moments of sunlight, quickly obliterated again by racing black clouds. The other two tracks are 'Leo', a solo composition by Chiossone with exotic tendencies, that at times sounds like a musical menagerie has been let loose in your bedroom, and the doleful, low key 'Hasmig'. Aldea (ex-Deity Guns, ex-Bastard, now composing for choreographer Abou Lagra and the dance company La Baraka) and Chiossone (a multi-instrumentalist from Lyons) are joined on this recording by a strong backing group of musicians wielding an array of traditional string and wind instruments.

STEWART GOTT - 31 October 2003
